Obituary for Ruth Norene (Peterson) Schumann
Born on March 7, 1925 the fifth of six children of Ole A.Peterson and wife Jennie
(Pederson), Ruth Norene Schumann (age 91) passed away on Monday, February 6 at
the Aspirus Pleasantview Nursing Home in Phillips, Wisconsin. She was born on a
farm in Rib Lake (Wisconsin), but the family moved to Phillips when she was 10
years old. Ruth graduated from Phillips High School in 1943 and continued her
education for three more years at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN.
She also took courses at the UW-Madison before going to work as a legal secretary
in the law firm of Frankel, Langhammer and Pines. Ruth divorced and remarried in
Madison where she raised her three children and remarried two more times before
retiring to her beloved hometown, where she purchased a house and acreage on the
Elk River in 1989. Here she could revel in the views of nature that fed her artistic
imagination.
While still in Madison Ruth traveled extensively, including several sailing excursions
in the Caribbean and she honed her public speaking skills as a member of the
Toastmistress's Club. Ruth will be remembered as the talented, creative and much
beloved "black sheep" of her generation, who took great delight in painting,
photography and pottery making. Always interested in politics and widely read in
several fields, she was fascinated by the dramas played out on C-Span and was also
an avid bridge player, a hobby she pursued until age 90.
Ruth is survived by her son Jole (Frankie) Shackelford and grandsons Gorm (Sarah
Norman) and Leif (Erika Anderson), as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by sons Thomas and Terry Shackelford, daughter-in-law
Sherrilyn and granddaughter Shauna Shackelford, husbands Richard Shackelford
and Robert Schumann, and siblings Emily Johnson, Ruby Nolan, and Orville, Wiley,
and John Peterson. Inurnment will take place at Two Lakes Cemetery in Phillips on
July 1
