DONALD CHARLES KLEIN

Donald C. Klein, 98, longtime Phillips resident died on Sunday, September 4, 2016, at the Aspirus Pleasant View Nursing Home, Phillips..
He was born on November 21, 1917, in Minneapolis, Minn., the son of Edward and Viola (Russell) Klein. He moved with his family as a child to Butternut in 1920. He attended school in Butternut. Following his education he was employed by the Civilian Conservation Corp until the time he entered military service. He was married to Evelyn Bloom on October 28, 1942, in Bessemer, Michigan.
He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW2 in the Infantry with the 1st Division in the European Thearte of Action from 1942 to 1945. While serving his country he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Cross for bravery.
Following his military service they made their home in Phillips. He was employed as a rural mail carrier from 1957 until the time of his retirement in 1979. He was also involved with dairy farming, operated the Norwood Thearte and owned rental property all in the Phillips area.
He was a member of St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, the Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post #5778 and the Lane-Kreiling American Post #122, all of Phillips, and the Rural Letter Carriers Assn.
In his free time he was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, and woodworking projects. He made many handcrafted wooden items for his family, which they proudly display in their homes.
He is survived by his 2 children: Chuck (Dorie) Klein and Bonnie (Ronald) Dunbar, all of Phillips, by 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 sister: Nina (Ralph) Mischker, Reno, Nevada.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his wife Evelyn on July 6, 2014, and by 3 brothers.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church, Phillips, with Fr. Gerald Hagen officiating. Inurnment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Phillips, with military honors conducted by the Frank and Michael Baran VFW Post #5778 and the Lane-Kreiling American Post #122, both of Phillips. Friends may call on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016 from 10:00 A.M .at the church until the time of the service.
The Heindl Funeral Home, Phillips, is in charge of the arrangements.
